Saying Goodbye to Old Technology

By

In just a decade, some modern conveniences have nearly become obsolete. Sometimes it is hard to change, but we are experiences a faster turnover of technology than ever before. In my young 50 years, I can still remember our first black and white television set that Dad brought into our home. We were stuck to that small little box. When color was introduced, it seemed like a true miracle. Now with the change to HDTV, the older larger fatter televisions are being junked and replaced by the slimmer, trimmer, sleeker and sharper screens and surround sound systems.

How nostalgic are you?

What thing do you miss the most?

  • Zip disks
  • Fax machines
  • Landline telephones
  • Dial-up modems
  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • Film Cameras
  • Hand-written letters
  • Other
  • None of the above

What happened to calling on a telephone?  Landlines have been replaced with cell phones or video conferencing. Texting and tweeting are overtaking old-fashioned calling.

Faxes (large cumbersome and noise fax machines) are becoming defunct. Scanning and sending a pdf file is much more convenient and less noisy and more reliable than sending a fax.

Newspaper classified sections – Craigslist, Salespider, Oodle, and other onlineclassifieds are edging out newspaper ads. Even newspapers are getting worried that they will be obsolete soon. Job searching is becoming easier online also instead of standing in line at a human resource office.

Dial-up internet modems and services are being replaced. Wireless is the way to go (quieter and less expensive in most cases) and it is becoming available in many areas.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries – You can find information about most anything by doing a search on Google, Bing or Wikipedia. What to do with the out-dated encyclopedias sitting and collecting dust on your bookshelves is the question.

Zip discs that were popular only yesterday it seems are now rarely seen. External hard drives have become less expensive and you can even fill up a flash drive with almost all you have to share.

Film Cameras – Digital cameras are all the rage now and becoming less expensive so anyone can be a photographer. Most phones also have cameras built in.

Phone Books, Address Books and Yellow Pages - Smartphones have replaced them for the most part.

Catalogs in the mailbox is now spam in your email inbox. It can easily be deleted or deflected with anti-spam software.

Hand-written letters have been replaced by email or text messaging. Will Christmas cards be next?

I only received one Christmas card this year, but got plenty of Christmas messages online.

Records, cassette discs and even CDs have been replaced with mp3 and mp4s.

Just as you think you have mastered a new technology, it becomes obsolete. Are we trapped in it?

Do we really have to have the latest, most powerful, fastest, etc. on the line. Are we so impatient that we cannot do anything the old fashioned way?

What would happen if the internet would suddenly disappear? I guess we would all be in a pickle. Or perhaps we might find peace.

wow that video is incredible. So true. I mean im almost 30 and its incredible to see how much has developed since i moved to the states. At first we only needed to learn to type. No you need to learn how to use programs and coding etc. Its fun but man is it moving fast. The one thing i like about the speed of technology is that as the newer things come out the still cool new things drop in price. Great Hub.

Thanks for commenting Jake. Your right about the prices going down on the old tech when the new comes in. Aloha!

Interesting. I think it is also true that something is lost every time we advance. The pleasure of reading a good book will never be replaced electronically for me, for example. And a case can be made for saying many people can't or won't try to keep up with the new stuff as it replaces the old faster and faster. It will become increasingly a young person's world as older people resist change and cling to their old technology as long as possible. Interesting. Bob

Well done...As a technology person, I can appreciate your dedication to history here...Throw in an IBM 5150 PC and a game of pong and I am there...thanks

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

This only good thing came out of it that it uses less paper. Thank you for your well written hub.

Great hub. I am a dabbler in new technology. I can only go so far, although I do have the Nook and I love it, despite its bugs!

I too am in my 30's and have seen a large amount of new technology. It is difficult to keep up at times. Fascinating though. I look forward to all that technology may bring and hope that it will continue in the medical field as well.

I appreciate all the comments. Yes, there is resistant from some and we older people will get squeezed out if we don't at least try the new technology. A bit too fast for me, though. Aloha!

I loved the video of the interactive tabletop! So cool! I appreciate new technology, but I do wish sometimes life could be simpler.

I appreciate the new technology, but sometimes it's hard to keep up with the newest computer options that hit the market. great article, thanks.

Thanks Rose West and Truth From Truth for your comments. New technology is fun and expensive. Yes, I agree that it would nice if life were simpler. Aloha!

While it my choice to enjoy or not enjoy the new technology I must admit that I am beginning to be a victim of this age of quick response and instance gratification due largely to the new culture brought forth by this information era. I have strive to and set goals to still enjoy a good classical book each year and to keep reading though provoking literature. I am able to choose to enjoy both. Thanks for the opportunity to reflect upon this question and and choose to be happy regardless. Cheers

That is a positive way to look at things. If only all of us could be so good. Aloha!

A hub that really makes a person think.

I remember how excited I was when I installed my own 8 track in my 65 galaxie.

This hub is so true but also brings back a lot of great memories.

You can now check out your hub on my blog if you want but just know it does deserve a spot there.

Cheers

Dale

A walk down memory lane....the first FAX was accomplished in the 1846. I think it's time to give it a rest. Dial-up is fun, I'll never forget the sounds of making a handshake to the rest of the interwebs.

Zip disks (and it's a disk, not disc...a disc is a little plastic round thing, a disk is like a floppy etc. But that's semantics and pedantic.) were intriguing, but loved to fail on certain models.

I miss minidiscs the most--I love MO storage, it's more permanent than DVD and allows you to re-write over it plenty more times than flash drives or SD cards.

Thanks for the correction Ixxy and I can tell you really know your stuff! Glad you stopped by to check out my technology hub.

Hey elayne001,

Great hub and since I'm a technie by nature, I loved the awesome microsoft video about the tabletop cool surface to come in near future. I can't wait...fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing!

P.S. I cringle when someone wants to fax me something...and I have to reconnect my fax and blow the dust off. Full steam ahead with technology!

Thanks easylearningweb for your comments. Yes, technology changes so rapidly, we can barely keep up.

Monty 20 months ago

Hi i heard a quote on the time frames that new tecnology took to be introduced, from years to people lining up before its been released. Have you? Would love to get a copy

elayne001 20 months ago

Not sure about that - I would like to know though, Monty, if you find it.
