The Latest Viral Groups on Facebook
By elayne001
I check facebook nearly every day. Just a couple of weeks ago I saw a new group created which was called "You know you lived or been to Laie if.....", and since I have lived in Laie, I was excited to join. And then I posted a little diddy about my memories of Laie. My mail inbox was flooded with other posts from people who have lived or been in Laie (North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii). I was excited, but spent way too much time reading all the memories people had from years past. I finally had to go to my settings and uncheck the box where it says to email me when anyone posts. However, it has been very fun and interesting. Then another person started a group for You know you're from Orem UT if... which also went viral and flooded my mail when I joined. It has been like a walk down memory lane, as well as an education about how old I am compared to most of the others posting.
People love to post things they experience, especially while they were growing up. I admit I am guilty of posting a few of my memories - many more than people want to know about. I have been reminded of things that were stashed away in my cobwebs which have resurfaced as a result of another post in the group.
One thing that these groups allow is for you to invite all your own friends (who may have had similar experiences), and thus the viral effect. If each person who joined also invited their friends ... you get it (viral!!)
So, if you want to start your own group of people who lived in Rupert, Idaho (for example), you can just start a group on facebook called "You know you're from Rupert Idaho if..." and see what happens. Viral social media on the rise! Go Facebook!
I just discovered another group "You know if you're Tongan if....", very fun group. You must be approved to join - supposedly someone that has admin status will let you in (if you are, or they think you are Tongan).
This new trend has caught on very fast, and I imagine it will continue to grow - unlimited. It may well outdo the planking, owling and ostriching trends that have people lying, perching and hiding in very awkward positions all over the world. If you have missed this trend, you must be ostriching!
I think these viral groups have taken hold so fast because we are all a bit down because of the economy and lack of good leadership. We just want to remember the good times, and connect with friends and people who have similar experiences.
Go ahead - start your own viral group about your hometown, school, ethnicity or hobby.
Watch This!! Amazing...
Here are a few other groups that have been started (to date):
¸.•♥•.¸¸.•♥• you know you are kenyan when•♥• .¸¸.•♥•.¸.
You Know You're From Louisiana When...
You know you're from GUAM when....
If you can't find one you belong to, well, that is your opportunity to start one. Have fun!

Thanks moncrieff. Doesn't need to be location, but even interests, careers, etc. I appreciate your comments.
I gave you a thumbs up. I'm sure there are lots of people unaware of this phenomenon but you bring it to their attention. I actually started one about the elementary school I went to.
I am a complete luddite. I don't even know how to request a friend!!
Great Hub. I spent 7 years on Oahu and had some wonderful times diving and surfing on the North Shore.
The Frog
I too have spent way too much time on those sites, but it has been fun for sure! Thanks for the great hub...oh and I just found another one that you may be interested in called "if you lived or grew up in liahona" :)
That's great tillsontitan. Hope you reap many memories from you group.
One thing at a time breakfastpop. You will get to it, eventually. We all have to learn. Anyways, what is a luddite exactly?
Thanks for your positive comments The Frog Prince. Glad you enjoyed yourself whilst you were on Oahu. Aloha!
I've been participating in a group that, at last count, has 5,900 members called "I Grew Up in DC." For a couple of weeks, it was all I could do to keep up with reading, posting and commenting on memories of growing up in the nation's capitol in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Membership ranged from people born as early as 1938 to those born in the late 70s.
Thankfully, I have Gmail which combines emails on the same topic in digest format so that instead of getting 150 separate emails on the same topic, I get one that combines them all; otherwise, my inbox would have been swamped.
It's starting to fizzle out a bit, but people are still commenting, as well as planning get-togethers for those who are still in the area. It's been an amazing experience.
What an intriguing phenomenon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it, Elayne. Rated up and interesting.
Thanks for adding your experience with this new trend. Glad you are enjoying it. So appreciate your vote PWalker281.
My brother was very excited when he found a "You know you're from Chicago when..." group a couple years ago. It's not something that I'm going to visit frequently, but it can be fun to pull up once in a while.
Interesting the way people relate to one another these days. You know you're old school when . . . you're mystified by Facebook like I am.
That's great randomcreative - I wonder who started the first "you know you're from.....when. It would be interesting to find out.
hehehe PegCole17 - at least you are on Hubpages - you're not so old school!
Still learning more about facebook, thanks for the share:)
Me too heart4thword. With technology, it evolves so fast, it is hard to keep up. Thanks for your comments.

Interesting. I've noticed those "local" groups on FB and I've been thinking myself about creating a good FB group, just don't know what kind (I can't really do locations).
