Do You Prefer Wavy Hair or Straight Hair

Frizzy, straight or curly?

See all 7 photos

I hate my hair! Why can't it be like so and so's hair? That has been one of my biggest struggles in life - my hair. I was born with what is called dishwater blond hair (looks dirty, in other words). So since I was in junior high school, I have colored my hair ash or golden blonde.

Of course, coloring your own hair comes with a lot of surprises. Actually, depending on the brand of hair color, I have had lovely shades of green all the way to strawberry blonde! Now that I have gotten that under control (I always buy the same shade of the same brand), I still have hair that tends toward frizzy, especially since I live in Hawaii (humid and hot).

Which do you prefer?

My hair is naturally curly or in other words, it goes exactly where it wants to.

Whenever I have my hair trimmed, the beautician always has a fit when she sees how curly my hair goes after trimming the dead ends off and conditioning it. They always say I should just embrace my curly hair and enjoy it. But, my hair also has many cowlicks. There are certain areas on my scalp where I prefer the hair to go one way, but inevitably it will go the other way.

I have about three straightening irons, two curling irons, about five blow dryers, and all types of hair brushes. I have a whole shelf of shampoos, conditioners, de-frizzers, and other hair tonics that I have tried and in my eyes, they have failed. It is pretty insane.

The sad thing about all this is that all I want is straight hair. I look at others with their long straight hair and wish my hair would do that on its own. Why are we never satisfied with what we have?

I have heard that the Japanese have developed a hair straightening technique that is very successful, but when I suggest to the beautician that I want it, she says it will ruin my hair. So then I get nervous and don't do it.

I have also heard about the Brazilian Keratin Treatmentwhich is supposed to be very effective.

My dream hair!!

What's a girl to do? One time I decided to embrace my curls and actually thought if I had a permanent, at least then I could make the curls go the way I want them to. Wrong! That was a BIG mistake. I had a frizzy mess for about a year.

Sometimes to get my hair in the style I like, I wash, then blow dry, then straighten and then curl. What kind of madness is that?

At one time my hair started falling out - not too long ago. I decided it is better to have some hair than no hair. I got a shampoo Mane 'n Tail Shampoo (which is also for horses and dogs) and since then my hair has stopped falling (thank goodness).

What kind of hairstyle do you like best?

I know I am just playing into the whole pressures of society thing, but a lady needs to feel good about herself when she goes out in public.

I am just looking for that perfect beautician who will read my mind, and give me the perfect haircut that will make it fall perfectly after I wash it. I know I am asking too much, but I will keep trying.

Great Video for Those with Curly Hair

I know there are some great products out there to help out with my dilemma. I will keep trying them until I find the right one for hot humid weather like we have almost year round here in Hawaii.

I have very curly hair so can relate to you. I tried for years to have straight hair, but the minute I stepped out in the high humidity of New York, my hair would get frizzy. Here in the Oregon weather, my hair behaves better but have to spend hours to get a straight do, so I now use hot rollers on occasion to create smooth waves, which my s/o and friends like.

Thanks for commenting VioletSun. Glad you have found style that works for you. When I am in Utah, where my family is from, my hair goes much straighter and is more manageable, but the humidity here is the problem.

Hello, hello, 22 months ago

I know what you are talking about. I have curly hair and it is a headache the moment the weather is damp.

elayne001 22 months ago

At least it is comforting to know that I am not alone. Thanks Hello, hello.

LianaK 22 months ago

I sure do know about wavy hair :). Gotta love all the products that we buy to make our hair smooth or curly. Great hub and hope that my hair learns how to do what I want it to do.

elayne001 22 months ago

Thanks LianaK. I understand totally how you feel. Hoping you have a great hair day - soon.

My mom's hair was so thick and so dry I started trying oils meant for African American women I think, there is one called pink ,,something. Its in a pink bottle and sold in that section for hair. It also works for me if I use just a few drops, blot my hair with towel, then comb through, but leave pretty wet, shiny and manageable. Hot rollers do help for a smooth soft look when you have time.

elayne001 22 months ago

Thank you Pollyannalana - I used to have hot rollers, but it is so dang hot already and I am worried about damaging my hair further. I will try to look for the oil though. I found the Mane 'n Tail shampoo and conditioner in the aisle for African American hair and I am really happy with it. I appreciate your help.

Straight hair is more beautiful and manageable!! Maybe, oiling and oil treatment could help hair straight up in the long run!!

GojiJuiceGoodness 22 months ago

Very interesting. I've never been one to worry much about my hair. I've had long hair for years, but I wanted my hair to be curly, not just kinky. So, I cut it about shoulder length so it can curl naturally & I love it.

To me, curly hair is just perfect--my sister-in-law has really curly hair & she's a dirty-blond color & I think it looks great.

This is exactly what keeps salons in business. Many many years ago I was a hair stylist. Nearly everyone wants a hairstyle that they don't have. If it's curly, people want it straight and vice versa. I did men's hair when they were getting perms in the 70s! And for men who wanted to look like Rod Stewart (when his hair was long and beautiful). I bet those guys are wearing the Howie Mandell (shaved) look by now.

Best advice I can give you is move to a climate like Texas where the air is dry and hair goes completely straight. I'm really thinking about getting a perm today. Just tired of the limp, fine, nothing hair I have. Wanna trade? hahaha

elayne001 22 months ago

Gee, dreamreachout - I agree with you about the straight hair - that is my dream for sure.

@GojiJuiceGoodness - Glad you don't worry about hair - it is pretty pathetic isn't it? Glad you love your naturally curly hair.

So PegCole17 - I would love to move to Texas - but can't think of another reason to go there rather than my hair would be straight. I know my hair sits pretty nicely in Utah - I blow it dry and it actually stays the way I blow it. I would be willing to make a trade if it were possible. At least for a while....

Elayne, Great hub. I have curly and sometimes frizzy hair so I know exactly what you mean. I just keep it fairly short, use good conditioning products and accept this is the best its going to get.

Research Analyst 22 months ago

To me wavy hair is so pretty, and straight hair can be nice and chic for special occasions.

elayne001 22 months ago

Thanks Pamela99. Thanks for sharing your hair secrets with us. Glad you have come to terms with it.

@Research Analyst - It would be great if we could just always wear our hair how we want, either curly or straight. I guess there are wigs - but they are so hot and heavy. We should just be glad we have hair at all. We may not in a few years.

CASE1WORKER 22 months ago

I COULD LEND YOU SOME STRAIGHTNESS FOR A LITTLE CURLY- EVEN A LITTLE WOULD BE GOOD!

M. Rose 22 months ago

I feel you on this one for sure! I've got wavy, thick hair + cowlicks so I know how tough it can be. You're very brave for attempting straight hair in Hawaii...when I vacation in Hawaii, I don't even bother straightening my hair because it unstraightens itself by the afternoon! Great hub :)

elayne001 22 months ago

I'm all for trading CASE1WORKER - if only hehe

Thanks M. Rose - You have experienced the humidity of Hawaii then so you understand - that makes me feel better. But I'll keep trying nevertheless.

I have a dozen nieces with wavy hair.. They try to change their looks by having their hair "straightened" via beauty salons. They looked different alright, but it seemed to erased the "soft" look on their faces or appearance. They look "stern", but this may be not the right term.. The wavy light hair still suit them, well, at least to me. But if they feel happy with their new look, then, let it be..

elayne001 22 months ago

Thanks for adding your experience with your nieces Alta5656. I guess it is better to by soft than look stern. Sometimes we try to look like others, when we would do well to be happy with what we are blessed with.

Wow Great Hub ! I completely understand the dilemma , I have very thick , wavy hair . Of course since I color it now it's really dry . High humidity and it's rare here but when it comes it frizzes out in volume .

elayne001 22 months ago

Glad you understand, but hope you have found a way to enjoy it most of the time. Thanks for commenting.

pmccray 22 months ago

I voted for neither style curly or straight. It depends on the contour of ones face. I personally use straightening products on my locks. Being black my particular hair texture is very very thick and curly.

Most of the time I will wear hair pieces, because my hair is now gray and I'm unable to use the straighter along with hair color(not even non-permanent). If I do so I suffer massive hair loss.

Contrary to popular belief, African American hair is actually delicate not coarse, and we must be careful of with what we use.

If I were you I'd spend a little money and entrust your curls to a professional. Maybe they can come up with a style/cut you'll be happy with in your hair's natural state. That way you can take care of it on your own.

Best of luck.

elayne001 21 months ago

Thanks for the advice pmccray. I have actually entrusted my hair to what I thought were professionals, but have never been satisfied with the results, especially after spending a horrendous amount of money. That is why I am just trying to deal with it myself. Maybe I am too hard to please? I appreciate your comments.

elayne001 21 months ago

Thanks for sharing peacegirl01. My hair is the pits some days, especially with the humidity here in Hawaii and also the trade winds. Glad you like your hair. I'm a little green, but I'll get over it.

peacegirl101 21 months ago

Aloha!

peacegirl101 21 months ago

elayne001 21 months ago

No problem peacegirl101 - we should be glad for others and I am for you. At least I have hair! It could be worse!!

peacegirl101 21 months ago

Thank you elayne! Yes, and everybody has beautiful hair, including you. People have wavy, curly, and straight hair, black, brown, and blonde hair. Short, long, or in between. Hair is somthing that God gave us. And we should be thankful for it even if you aren't too crazy about your hair. And remember, the best kind of beauty is inner beauty. Not on the outside. But on the inside. Hope this helps! Aloha! :)
